AVARAKKAI KOOTU RECIPE | BROAD BEANS KOOTU

Avarakkai kootu recipe with step-wise pictures. Avarakkai kootu is a simple, traditional south Indian side dish for rice. It is easy to make and goes well with rice and appalam. This is also known as poricha kulambu and can be made adding any vegetables like bottle gourd, cabbage and ladies finger.

No. Of serving : 3-4

INGREDIENTS:

  • Avarakkai – 1 cup
  • Moong dal – 1/3 cup
  • Red chilli – 3
  • Onion – 1
  • Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp
  • Chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Sambar powder – 1 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp

TO GRIND:

  • Grated coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Coriander seeds – 1 tsp
  • Cumin seeds – 1 tsp
  • Pepper seeds – 1/2 tsp

METHOD:

1. Wash and cut avarakkai into small pieces. Take avarakkai and moong dal in a pressure cooker, add 3 cups of water and cook for 3 whistles.

2. Once the pressure releases, open the lid and mash the moong dal slightly. Keep aside.

3. Take coconut, Coriander seeds, pepper seeds and Cumin seeds in a mixer. Add little water and grind into smooth paste. Keep aside.

4. Heat a pan with oil, add mustard seeds and Cumin seeds. Once it splutters add curry leaves and red chilli. Saute for a minute.

5. Add chopped onion and saute until translucent. Now add the cooked avarakkai moong dal mixture along with required salt.

6. Stir and add Turmeric powder, chilli powder, Coriander powder and sambar powder. Cook for 2-3 minutes until raw smell goes.

7. Add the grounded coconut paste and cook in low flame for a minute. Garnish with Coriander leaves.

8. The delicious avarakkai kootu is ready. Serve hot for rice adding little ghee.
