Barley ragi sweet potato soup recipe with step-wise pictures. Barley ragi sweet potato soup is an apt recipe to have for navratri fasting. This healthy soup or kanji is from my new blogger friend Neeru from neeskitchen, who always fascinate me with her brilliant recipe photographs and you will be seeing that such good pictures in this recipe too. Now over to her.

After I started food blogging I got a new set of friends from the blogging community. All are very approachable and help me when I go with some simple and silly queries. One such friend is Swathy from Shravs kitchen. She approached me few days back to write a guest post for her blog and I immediately accepted and decided to do some healthy recipe.
Navratri is the time where some of them observe fasting. During fasting its good to have a filling soup and since it no onion and no garlic time I decided to make this soup which is a mix of roasted barley powder, ragi and boiled sweet potato. There is no thickening agent needed for this soup as all of the ingredients have the nature to thicken the soup.

All the three ingredients are diabetic friendly and is suitable for all age groups. The natural sweetness in sweet potato will satisfy our sweet cravings (if there are any). The soup is absolutely filling and light and very appropriate for dinner time.

Barley, Ragi & Sweet Potato Congee

Preparation Time – 10 mins | Yields – 3 cups

Cooking time: 20 mins

Measurements: 1 tsp = 5ml, 1 tblsp = 15 ml, 1 cup = 237 ml

Ingredients:

  • Barley – ¼ cup
  • Sweet Potato – 2
  • Ragi flour – 1 tblsp
  • Water – 1000ml
  • Salt to taste

PREPARATION:

1.Dry roast the barley until a nice aroma comes and the white color barley turns into light brown color.

2.Let it cool. Powder into a coarse texture in a mixie.

3.Pressure cook the sweet potato for  3 whistles.

4.Take out and peel the skin.  Chop them roughly into small pieces. Do not mash.

5.Take a pan add 1 liter water and  once it comes to boil add the roasted  barley powder, salt and mix well.

6.Let it cook for 6 minutes. You may  then add the ragi flour.

7.Mix well and make sure the ragi  does not form any lumps.

8. Cook for another 8 minutes.

9.Add the boiled sweet potato and  mix well.

10.Bring it to boil and switch off  immediately.

Barley,Ragi & Sweet potato congee is  ready. Serve hot.
