Horsegram sesame chutney recipe with step-wise pictures. Horsegram sesame chutney / Kollu ellu chutney is a simple and healthy south Indian side dish. It is best served as side dish for idli or dosa. This chutney also goes well with rice and ghee. This is very good to have in winters and both the ingredients has many health benefits.

INGREDIENTS:

  • Kollu / horsegram – 1/2 cup
  • Ellu / sesame – 1/2 cup
  • Toor dal – 2 tbsp
  • Channa dal – 2 tbsp
  • Small onion – 6
  • Coriander seeds – 2 tbsp
  • Fenugreek seeds – 1 tsp
  • Tamarind – lemon size
  • Coconut grated – 1/4 cup
  • Red chilli – 4
  • Garlic – 6 pods
  • Salt – as required

TEMPERING:

  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Channa dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig

METHOD:

1. Dry roast horsegram and sesame separately in medium flame until it turns color. Keep aside.

   

2. Heat a pan adding little oil, add Toor dal, channa dal, Fenugreek and Coriander seeds. Roast until golden and add red chilli, onion, garlic and Tamarind to it.

3. Roast everything for a minute and allow it to cool. Once it cools, add it to blender along with roasted horsegram and sesame.

   

4. Add grated coconut, required salt and required water to it. Grind everything into smooth paste. Transfer into serving bowl.

   

5. Heat a pan with oil, add mustard seeds, channa dal and Urad dal. Once it splutters add curry leaves. Stir well and add this tempering to grounded chutney.

6. Mix well and serve for idli or dosa.
