Vendakkai puli kulambu / Ladies finger masala kulambu is a authentic south Indian gravy that goes well with rice. The aroma of the gravy will be so tempting and we are all addicted to its taste. A simple gravy to try for lunch and we had it with rice and simple potato fry.



  • Ladies finger – 10 chopped
  • Onions – 10 peeled
  • Garlic – 5 peeled
  • Tomatoes – 1
  • Tamarind juice – 1/3 cup
  • Coconut – 1/2 cup
  • Oil – 2 tsp
  • Urad dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Chana dal – 1/2 tsp
  • Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
  • Pepper seeds – 5
  • Corainder powder – 1 tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1/2 tsp
  • Chilli powder – 1 tsp
  • Sambar Powder – 1 tsp
  • Salt – as required


1.Heat oil in a kadai, add some onion, garlic and tomato. Fry until onion turns translucent.

2.Transfer to mixie jar and grind into paste adding coriander powder and pepper seeds.

3.Grind coconut into paste adding little water.

4.Add oil in the same kadai and add mustard seeds, urad dal and chana dal.

5.When they splutter add onion, garlic and ladies finger. Saute for 5-10 minutes till it changes colour.

6.Add the grinded paste and tamarind juice. Add required water and boil till raw smell goes.

7.Then add coconut paste and salt, turmeric, sambar, chilli powders. Simmer the flame and cook covered for few minutes.

8.Switch off flame when oil separates and ladies finger gets cooked.

9.Serve hot with steaming rice adding coriander leaves and ghee at top.



  • Coconut can be added while grinding onion and tomato itself.
  • Red chilli can be added instead of chilli powder.
